We run our ads on The Michigan Daily using the following 2 Google products:
- Google Ad Manager: where we create ads and serve our own ads that the business section sells
- Google AdSense: where our Google personalized ads are served from and where our bank account is connected
Login and account information for the above accounts is located in our password manager. Only the Web MOEs and Business Staff have access to Ad Manager / AdSense.
How ads work
AdSense serves Google Ads and can operate on its own. However, Google AdManager allows us to serve our own ads (e.g. ads from the university).
Our website connects to AdManager to receive the actual ad units we serve. Anytime a user loads a page, Google looks at how much our customer is paying for an ad (and if we’re on track to meet that advertiser’s advertising goal) and how much other third-party advertisers on Google’s ad networks would pay. The advertiser that bids the highest amount gets to show their ad in the ad unit. This happens for every ad unit on every page load!
If the ad comes from a third-party advertiser on Google’s ad networks, the ad is served from AdSense through Google AdManager. The money we make on these third-party ads will be recorded in our Google AdSense account.
If the ad shown comes from a direct sale from our business section, the ad is served from Google AdManager, where the business section has already uploaded creatives (an image of the ad). The money made off of these ads will not be shown in AdSense.
