The Michigan Daily manages all of its passwords through 1Password. Every account The Daily uses needs to be in this password manager.
1Password Access
Only 10 people are eligible to have direct access to our password manager. They are:
- Student Publications Manager
- Business Professional Staff
- Editor in Chief
- Business Manager
- Managing Editor
- Digital Managing Editor
- Both Web MEs
- Both Audience Engagement MEs
Only the professional staff and The Big 3 will have access to all passwords. Web MEs will have access to any technology/cloud/application passwords while Audience MEs will have access to all social accounts.
If you need a password, you need to reach out to someone above. They will securely send the password to you.
If you are not one of the 10 people above, you can ignore the rest of this page, as you don’t have access to the password manager. However, password managers are cool, and we would highly encourage you to get your own for personal use! (Recommended: Bitwarden, LastPass and 1Password)
Logging on to 1Password
Our password manager is at: https://themichigandailyofficeofstudentp.1password.com
The Student Publications Manager or the EIC will have created an account for you before you log in. The password you use for this account must be super secure, because if this is a weak password, you could compromise every TMD password.
Managing passwords
Inside 1Password, our passwords are stored in vaults to help with organization. For instance, all social media accounts are stored in the Social vault and all web team accounts are stored in the Web Team vault. All vaults will be accessible to admins of the password manager.
When you transition out of leadership and onboard the next leadership, make sure they have access to the vaults they need access to!
1Password is the only place these passwords will be stored. This means no more insecure google docs/spreadsheets that list all of our passwords!
Sharing passwords
Since more people than the 10 mentioned above will sometimes need access to a password. Do not just slack or text the password directly. Instead, follow these steps to securely send the password:
- Find the password you want to share in its vault and click on it
- Click on the arrow symbol next to the star under the account title and then click on
Share…
- In the modal that pops up, change the sharing settings to
1 view
. For additional security, add the email address of the person you’re giving access to.
- Then copy the link and send it to the person you’re sharing it to. You can simply send the link to them through slack. Let them know that the link expires after 1 view.
- They should now be able to access the password once. If they need to access the password more than once, have them download their own personal password manager to store the password in. Also, let that person know that they should not share the password with anyone else!
