Site performance can be monitored in multiple ways. The two ways we currently use at The Daily are through Google Lighthouse and through Google Search Console.

Google Lighthouse / PageSpeed Insights

In the Chrome browser’s dev tools, you can access Google Lighthouse. Here you can generate reports on your current site -- measuring mobile or desktop performance. Considering that over 65% of our pageviews are on mobile devices, it’s important to remember to test on mobile!

More information on using Google Lighthouse can be found here.

In addition to using Google Lighthouse through Chrome dev tools, you can create similar reports from PageSpeed Insights.

At the time of writing (May 2022), our homepage has a score of 33/100 on mobile and a score of 81/100 on desktop. Our homepage isn’t AMP, so its mobile performance is vastly inferior to the performance of our articles. For example, a news article has a mobile score of 75/100 on mobile and a score of 96/100 on desktop.

Who has access

Everyone! Anyone can check any url through Google Lighthouse or PageSpeed insights. You can even check other news websites.

Google Search Console

Google Search Console helps track site performance metrics that Google uses to help determine search engine results. Better performing sites are shown higher than the poorer performing sites in search results, so it’s important to monitor our website here. We should strive to meet all of Google’s Core Vitals.
