Managing Online Editor (MOE)
There are two managing online editors (MOEs) for the calendar year’s winter and fall semesters. We will detail the overall responsibilities and commitments for MOEs, but the two MOEs may split them up as they see fit.
Responsibilities
We would expect the time commitment to be 20-30 hours / week. If it proves to be more, it may indicate a need to scale back or slow down. Talk to the current MOEs for more information!
- Attend weekly MDesk meetings from 5-6pm every Sunday.
- Host weekly leadership meetings at 6:30pm and all-team meetings 7-7:30pm on Sunday.
- Attend daily (from Sunday to Thursday) story meetings from 6:15-6:30pm with other MEs in the newsroom.
- Attend weekly production shifts (two days for each MOE) from 6:30pm-9pm.
- Correspond regularly with the other MOE to set priorities and plan for projects and team management.
- Set up 2:1s with leadership as you all see fit for structured time to check in with them.
- Provide technical assistance to other sections with the WordPress site, Slack, recruitment website.
- Gather base-level details from other sections that leadership needs to start a project.
- Review designs and websites.
- Ensure expectations are met for senior leadership and staffers.

Note: The above descriptions have been edited and condensed for clarity.
How do I run for MOE?
Who can run? Anyone on the team!
Why should I run?
- Leadership experience: It is a rare opportunity to be deeply-involved in leadership at the scale of The Daily and the web team. You are able to gain hands-on experience of managing other leaders, team members, and real-world projects. The potential for visibility and influence is unimaginable. Not only can you think about your work on a higher-level, but you can pioneer the digital vision of a 132 year-old establishment.
- Learning: This is a challenge, and open to those who are ready to leave your comfort zone and make mistakes, but learn resilience, adaptability, and teamwork. By nature of our work, you can’t find the same unique learning opportunities in your classes, other student orgs, and internships.
- Collaboration: You will interact with other subteams on the web team and other sections on The Daily, gaining experience in domains that were once unfamiliar. Most importantly, you will be working alongside passionate individuals who inspire you.
- Career: Wherever you decide to work, the skills that you learn on the job will benefit you in the long-term. Your work is substantial and demonstrates your work ethic, capabilities, and so much more to potential employers.
Money: Your pay is in the range of $100 to $200. If you qualify for the federal work-study program or scholarships, you can earn more.
I want to run! Now what?
- Fill out the MOE interest form by 11/6
- You will run with your co-MOE during elections in early December.
I’m not too sure yet…
- Fill out the MOE interest form and indicate maybe as your answer!
- We will be more than happy for you to shadow us during meetings and production for you to get a sense of what we do :)
What are elections?
Even if you run uncontested, there will be an election process. To prepare for the election, you will write a 1 page platform outlining your ideas and plans for the web team. You will present the ideas from this platform during an election meeting for a few minutes. After your presentation, members on the team will ask questions, both serious and fun, for several minutes. After that, everyone will vote to approve, disapprove, or abstain the candidates.
Managing Online Editor (MOE) - Summer
The Managing Online Editor position for the Summer is a great opportunity to learn about how to manage a team and various projects, work with other sections and on a high-level in the web team, and gain insight into the behind-the-scenes workings. You would be able to see if leadership is for you and gain leadership experience if you’re interested in becoming a PM or MOE during the school term. Another perk is a small pay increase!
Your responsibilities include communicating with other sections of the Daily on cross-section projects, working with your school semester MOEs on infrastructural and vision & project planning, and attending weekly managing editor meetings. Oftentimes, other sections will reach out to you for any help regarding Wordpress. If you would like, you can still work on your subteam projects.
This opportunity is open to anyone on the web team of any subteam with at least one semester of experience. Freshmen and sophomores are encouraged to apply!
The time commitment for Managing Online Editor depends on the ongoing projects and external requests from other sections. Generally, we expect around 10 hours per week from May 1 to August 20, in addition to an onboarding shadowing experience with the current MOEs. The entire Summer position can be completed fully virtually.
For questions, reach out to the current Managing Online Editors or the MOE from last Summer. If interested, please Slack the current MOEs. We will host elections towards the end of the Winter semester - more information will be shared at an upcoming web team meeting.
Staff - Summer
Summer staff is open for all interested members of the web team from the previous semester! No one is required to work at the Daily over the Summer, but it is encouraged! It’s a great time to accomplish substantial goals for bigger projects or learn new skills. We’ll send a form after MOE elections to get a count for who’s planning on being active during the Summer.
In addition, you could have the opportunity to take on leadership roles and experience in leading a project. If you’re interested in further leadership opportunities, reach out to your PM(s) or MOE(s).
