Most Daily staff members have contributor level access and cannot fix most issues that have an asterisk (*) next to them. Instead, please reach out to #web-help and someone will help you out as soon as possible. But if you are an admin on the site, hopefully you find the information below useful!
Authors
My name isn’t correct
You can edit your user settings by clicking Profile
on the left-hand sidebar and updating your name:
Be sure to update the Display name publicly as
property
I can’t find an author’s name to add to an article
This is likely because the author you’re trying to add only has Subscriber level access. Ask The Big 3 to bump that person’s account to a Contributor and then try again.
I have 2 author pages!*
This is likely because there are two accounts under your name on the website. This is common for users who had accounts on the old website that were imported over. To fix this:
- Go to
Users > Guest Authors
- Search for the name or email of the author. If a guest author does appear, click to delete the guest author account.
- IMPORTANT make sure that you reassign the user’s content to the user’s correct account before deletion
- If the Guest Author does not appear, try to find the duplicate account in
Users > All Users
and follow steps 2-3.
Articles
Article is redirecting too many times*
If you go to an article and the page does not load or you get a message saying something along the lines of too many redirections, there is likely an issue with our redirection plugin. Articles on our old site had a different url structure, so when we migrated over, we automatically created redirections from the old links to the new ones. However, some of the articles kept the same link and for some reason now have a redirect back to themselves. A site admin should just delete that defunct redirection:
- On the admin left sidebar, go to
Tools > Redirection
- Paste the broken url in the upper right search bar and search by target URL:
- If you find the redirection in the table, first disable it. If it fixes the issue, then delete the redirection and you should be good to go!
Strange formatting in an old article
Some articles that were imported to the new website carried over weird formatting, including different fonts, duplicate featured images, different background colors, etc. To fix this:
- Copy and paste the text into a google doc.
- Edit the post and delete all of the content.
- Copy and paste the text from the google doc back into the post. The formatting should now be fixed
Google Search does not show re-published updates
Login to tmdwebsystem@gmail.com (accessible by current MOEs) and go to Google Search Console. Under URL prefix, add the website you would like to ask Google to recrawl for.
Media
Photos/Designs/GIFs load slowly or don’t at all
All photos/designs uploaded to the site MUST be ≤ 500 KB (0.5 MB) in file size, but the goal is to have them under 250 KB. Photos/designs larger than that will slow down the site, which has a direct impact on our number of readers, SEO and ad revenue. Compress your images before uploading to the site — the human eye will not notice any difference in quality. GIFs should be as small as possible, but at a maximum, below 5 MB.
The featured image is the wrong size
Featured images should have a rectangular aspect ratio and have a size of at least 1200 by 675 pixels.
Advertisements
Ads are showing up where they shouldn’t
Ads are automatically added to every article, inserted between X number of paragraphs/blocks. If you are publishing a poem, data story, special, etc, it’s possible for ads to show up between a subtitle and the text body or between two lines of a poem. This isn’t great, so if you notice this, please:
- ASK THE BIG 3 FOR APPROVAL then edit the article
- Scroll down to the bottom of the article and check
Prevent automatic addition of ads to this post
- Ask someone with admin access to the website to manually insert ad blocks into your article in more appropriate places.
Campaigns
Donations/pop-ups/campaigns don’t show up
This is actually a feature. When you are logged into the website, you will not see any campaigns. If you are testing out a campaign, simply check it out in an incognito/private window.
