To Learn:
Transom (Fostering the Art of Audio Storytelling)
- They boast a large archive of tools, techniques, ideas that are free to use!
- They have a sound school podcast which is a great way to learn techniques
To Listen:
Third Coast International Audio Festival
- Third Coast awards audio pieces and is a great place to find and listen to highly creative and inspiring audio pieces. They “seek to push at the boundaries of the audio industry and support an international community of creators who build our world in sound.”
- One of my favorite audio memoirs is called Man Choubam (I am good) by Sharon Mashihi which one a Third Coast award
To Make:
- Fair use music for podcasts (only for podcast episodes that aren’t monetized). You can search for music by mood, energy, instruments, and more
- Great way to experiment with sound design!
- Audio editing software that allows you to edit transcripts
- Also, it’s great to have a transcript for quick and speedy interview editing
- For downloading youtube videos (to grab newsreel broadcast)
Chrome Audio Capture (Chrome Extension)
- To record any audio on a Chrome tab (to grab newsreel or any audio you may need)
- Industry standard audio editing software
To Job Hunt:
- Association of Independents in Radio (AIR). Have great resources such as the rate guide (so you know how much to charge someone for your work!)
- Add yourself to their Talent Directory and you’ll get contacted for freelance gigs
- Student membership is $45/year
