Strike System Guidelines

The purpose of this system is to create better documentation of disciplinary action taken for staffers who do not abide by The Daily’s bylaws or other stated policies. MEs are responsible for tracking points within their section, Big Four is responsible for tracking points for MEs and CTI is responsible for tracking points for the Big Four. Staffers who reach three points will be fired. Points are cumulative and do not decrease or reset.

3-Point (Fireable) Offenses

This level of offenses includes any intentional action that harms the well-being of another Daily staffer or member of the community.

Examples include but are not limited to:

  • Discrimination and harassment
  • Plagiarism/AI use
  • Fabricating sources or facts

2-Point Offenses

This level of offenses includes intentional journalistic misconduct or disregard for Daily-wide or section policy.

Examples include but are not limited to:

  • Editing quotes to change their meaning
  • Interviewing friends
  • Talking publicly about internal Daily matters
  • Going above editors’ heads to make changes, such as publishing without permission or deleting edits
  • Unprofessional conduct with staffers

1-Point Offenses

This level of offenses includes disregard of job responsibilities at the expense of other staffers.

Examples include but are not limited to:

  • (For MEs) Missing MDesk without previously notifying Big Four
  • Not responding to an editor about edits or other matters after one follow-up

0.5-Point Offenses

This level of offenses includes disregard of basic job responsibilities.

Examples include but are not limited to:

  • Missing deadlines without previously asking for an extension
  • Missing a section meeting without previously notifying an ME
